Kalguty (Meeting Place) by Troy Bennell Basil Hart and Mark Denn
The river which flows across the painting is a place at which to meet and is a source of sustenance for all. It also has spiritual significance to the Kaniyang people, the traditional people of the area. Nyoongar people are depicted arriving, meeting, and then moving on, in the same way as they used to move through this country following bush tucker sources and tribal ceremonial customs. The strong tall jarrah trees frame the entire picture. Look closely to find all the wildlife – can you find the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo? Well known Nyoongar artist Troy Bennell mentored Basil Hart and Mark Denn in 2010 to paint the three panels which make up this large acrylic artwork.
