Child’s gramophone
Bringing music to life
In the 1920s a four-year-old girl, Nell Box, was ecstatic to receive this children’s gramophone as a gift. She’d carefully place her record of choice on the gramophone, turn the handle and listen in rapture as it released its melodies. So much did she treasure the music player that she brought it with her when she moved to Western Australia to work as a radio announcer. Later still, Box brought the gramophone with her to her husband’s farm in Northampton, where they brought up three girls. The girls too would gather around the gramophone, marvelling at the way this tiny instrument brought music to their ears.
