Natural Jewels

Not far from the raw and ruggedly beautiful escarpments of the Kennedy Range lies Mooka Creek, where Mother Nature wielded eons of varying geological forces to fashion these colourful jewel-like rocks. The rocks gain their name mookaite from the nearby Mooka Creek where they were found. Mooka means ‘running waters’ in the local Indigenous language. Geologists describe mookaite as chert, opalite, chalcedony or combinations of the three. The degree of silica in the material determines its description.
