Bowling ball and pins
Exmouth owes its formation to the US naval communication station established in 1968. At its prime the station supported a population of Americans who sent encrypted messages to United States and Australian navy submarines during the Cold War. But it wasn’t all work in those days. Among other pursuits, the Americans would partake in some lively bowling games at the Harold E. Holt Bowling Alley, which remains intact today. Having US families in Exmouth created a slice of America in the Western Australian north west. It wasn’t unusual to see left-hand drive Broncos, Dodges and Corvettes cruising the streets. US US President Lyndon B Johnson called Exmouth a “unique experiment in bi-national living.”
