Whale shark wire artwork

If there’s any one creature for which Ningaloo is famed, it’s the mighty whale shark. These gentle and giant sharks visit the region each autumn. They were also the inspiration for this giant wire artwork, which hangs from the ceiling in the Ningaloo Discovery Centre. In particular, this artwork honours ‘Stumpy’ the local whale shark recognised by its short upper tail fin. Stumpy was the first whale shark officially recorded for study at Ningaloo Reef in 1994, which makes him one of the longest-studied sharks in the world. Stumpy is thought to be more than 40 years old and still visits each whale shark season.
