Last surviving locomotive of its kind

This O 218 steam locomotive is the last intact survivor of its kind. It arrived in Fremantle aboard the SS Andavia in 1898 and travelled some 1.2 million kilometres before retiring in 1961. Behind the locomotive is a KA 17 carriage which once accommodated staff who’d set out to check great lengths of the State’s railway track. Step inside the carriage and you can see where the railway inspectors slept, groomed and watched out the windows as vast stretches of countryside slipped past.
