A social occasion

A lady’s horse racing ticket from 1904. The races in this region are still a big fanfare, with people travelling vast distances to attend a race 'meet’. The races were a great opportunity for women to frock up. It is interesting to note that separate tickets were issued by gender.

Side saddles were invented to preserve a woman’s modesty. They allowed women to ride horses in long skirts in a dignified manner. This side-saddle is a ‘two-pommel’ design.
