The humble cookbook

Recipes were handed down through generations of a family, often as a scrapbook. These scrapbooks contained recipes and helpful tips for looking after the family, such as this one, which has dress-making patterns. The CWA Cookbook and Household Hints probably grew out of this tradition.

Sewing machine and basket

The hub of the farm.

The kitchen was the hub of the farm. It is where meals were prepared and made, homework was done, and even clothes were made. This sewing basket and machine was donated by local woman Margaret Butler.
