Women's army uniform
Nungarin AWAS
Women played an integral part in the war effort. This was Private Lynda Lynch’s uniform, when she served in the Nungarin Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS). Lynda enlisted in the army in 1942 at the age of 18. During the 1940s, there were 1,200 to 1,400 army personnel based in Nungarin. The AWAS enabled women to join the army in specialist roles and there were approximately 400 AWAS personnel in Nungarin. These women worked as mechanics, drivers, in signalling and in first aid.
