Sandstone Heritage Museum and Visitor Centre

Tiny town with a huge history

A 1940s converted shop houses this locally cherished collection. The Museum was opened by dedicated volunteers who decided to save Sandstone’s relics, buildings and history. The items in the collection have all been donated by locals, and have intimate stories associated with them. Examples include the bright blue toy cash register owned by one of the volunteers, and a family sewing machine. Sandstone today is a small town of less than 100 people. However, in its heyday, in the early 1900s, the population of Sandstone was between 6,000 to 8,000 people.
