The “Civic” pipe

Showcase

Mr Ken Beaton donated this tobacco pipe display to the Museum in 1978. It is thought to have come from Harry Traver’s Tobacconist and Billiard Saloon, which operated in Southern Cross, as a one-stop-shop combining gifts, second-hand books, a barbershop and billiards saloon. If you look closely, you can see the words 'briar wood' at the bottom of the display case. These ‘Civic’ pipes were made of briar root (Erica arborea), an extremely heat resistant wood.
