Shinju Matsuri – Festival of the Pearl programs

Directory
What's in store at festival time

What started as a local community festival has grown into an internationally recognised event. Featuring on the cover of every program, is Sammy, the Dragon, who reminds us that Broome was, and probably still is, the ‘pearling capital of the world.’ A Chinese dragon hosting a Japanese named festival he represents the multicultural status and energy of Broome and its evolving community, which is celebrated in the program events that included highlights such as Mary Durack’s Ship of Dreams, the Obon festival of lanterns, Malay and Japanese dancing.
