Celebrating multiculturalism in quilts

Stitching together

In 1990 and in 2000 migrant women of the Pilbara came together to stitch stories of their identities, resilience and diverse cultures into community quilt banners. These colourful quilts, animated with people in cultural dress, depict the lives, cultural identity and feelings of the many women who came to work in the iron-ore rich towns of the Pilbara. It is a celebration of how they built communities in this harsh industrial landscape. Their works document the many faces and places of the Pilbara.
