“Untitled Landscape” by Phillip Hansen
This painting is one of nine paintings by Phillip Hansen in the Museum Collection. Hansen’s paintings are part of an ongoing style of Nyoongar art which emerged in the 1940s and is known as the Carrolup Style. This style is known for the often naïve or stylized landscapes, with untouched bush scenes often painted in colours which suggest dawn or sunset. Hansen brings his own qualities to this style of landscape painting by including Aboriginal figures, birdlife, kangaroos, and hunting and campfire scenes. Born in Katanning in 1950, Hansen and his family moved to live at Allawah Grove Settlement in Guildford when he was 12 years old. It was here that he developed his interest in art. He has lived in Collie for many years. Look out for more of his art at the Visitors Centre, in the town gardens and at the hospital.
