English stoneware from the 1700s

This canister was likely produced by stoneware manufacturer Wedgewood, who began producing such items in England in 1744. Wedgewood pieces are known for their colours, which were produced by staining stoneware in metallic oxides like this delightful shade of sky blue. Most Wedgewood pieces came adorned with white relief decorations. This canister may have once had a fitted lid, perhaps acting as a container for biscuits.
