Nut bag

Chapman Valley woman Maude Gould fashioned this small handbag with nuts from a tree known locally as a ‘button tree’. It’s possible she received the nuts from a local gentleman who travelled the district delivering vegetables. Gould would use whatever she could find to make bags, thinking creatively to repurpose old wheat straws, nylon ribbon, plastic tubing, men’s ties and leather into bags and purses.
