Mother Nature was feeling particularly creative when she fashioned jewel beetles, bejewelling them with an iridescent cloak of colour. But they are not just known for their good looks. Jewel beetles have the remarkable ability to detect fire up to 80 kilometres away, perhaps because some prefer to lay their eggs in freshly burnt trees.
