It is hard to imagine what this item is. It is a called a single knocker. It was used to relay messages to the winder driver. A coded message much like Morse Code was used. There were also code signals used for the underground miners. A winder is the large machine used to move the ore, machinery and people from the surface and below ground to the mine.
