Narrogin Doll Factory doll

Toy
A toy made of paper

When most people think about toys made of paper, they might think about kites or paper aeroplanes. However, in the early 1900s dolls were also made of paper. The Narrogin Doll factory was in production for five years between 1918 and 1923. Due to import restrictions after World War 1, there was a shortage of dolls. The factory started as a husband-and-wife team, Grace and Chris Burkitt, but expanded to employ 10 girls and 20 outworkers. The workers hand-crafted all the dolls out of papier-mâché. All the clothes and wigs were also added at the factory.
