On the land, by Carrie McDowell

Artwork
Living on the land

Carrie is a well-known Karratha-based artist and this work won the Work on Paper category at the Cossack Art Awards in 2017. This print collage depicts a country mapped and claimed as pastoral leases and dominated by cattle. Colourful and occasional remnant desert flowers appear to challenge these claims. The maps, the cattle, and the original desert flora indicate three simultaneous, and often conflicting, realities of this country.
