Condon Racing Club (CRC) Trophy Cup 2014
Proud of its racing heritage, the Port Hedland Racing Club continues to celebrate its origins with the annual Condon Cup (CRC), now known as the Port Hedland Cup. Condon townsite and the Condon races ceased with the move to the new site of Port Hedland. Not forgotten, the CRC cup remained a reminder of the role of Condon in the development of the De Grey region. Once a thriving port, Condon was situated at the mouth of the De Grey River, and was the former hub for transporting wool, live sheep and pearl shell to market. Held annually, between 1861 to 1902 the race week was always the highlight of Pilbara social life, when everyone gathered in town for balls, picnics, races, gymkhanas, as well as favourite pastimes such as shopping, gossiping, gambling and drinking.
