B4 The Sam Male
One of the last luggers in Broome, the B4 wears the tell-tale colours of green and white of the Streeter and Male pearling fleet. The boat is named after Sam Male whose father and uncle set up Streeter & Male, one of the first pearling companies in Broome. After a fruitful working career, in 1977 she became a popular tourist icon in Broome. Purchased by the Shire of Broome, she was put on the Male Oval and regularly used as a stage for community music events during Shinju Matsuri and on New Years’ Eve. Her current lodgings are at the Pearl Luggers, where she continues to be used as a stage, and with her sails up, provides an atmospheric screen for projections and films.
