Warraine (Eaglehawk) by Hector Jandany
Shinju Matsuri Art Award Winner 1997 Hector was born at Turkey Creek (now called Warmun) in 1929, where the Warmun art centre was established not long after the community moved back in 1979. A former stockman and camp cook from Texas Downs station, he was able to travel his ancestral country, which extended from Ngarrgoorroon, country north of Purnululu (the Bungle Bungles), to Texas Downs in the north. This is the country he paints in ochre, and Warraine is one of the major Ngarrangkarni (Dreamtime) cultural heroes of Gija people. Hector was one of the founders of the Warmun ochre style, along with other, well-known Warman artists such as with Queenie McKenzie and Rover Thomas.
