Flat irons

Equipment

Have you ever seen such a beautifully presented collection of irons? They look like they have come straight from the shop display, they are so shiny! The collection includes a range of metal flat irons which were heated on a fire or stove, and some models had containers for hot coals, to keep the heat for longer. The challenge was to keep the ironing plate spotlessly clean! Looking at the models of early steam irons, the bulbous water canisters look a bit hazardous to modern eyes! The display is a fascinating lesson on the development of the sleek electric iron we use today.
