"Sawmillers", 1974 by Guy Grey-Smith
Western Australian artist Guy Grey-Smith (1916 - 1981), with his wife Helen, bought a cottage in Pemberton in 1974, the same year he painted this striking work which exudes energy and strength. At the time, the timber industry was still active.Guy Grey-Smith was a very physical painter, laying down the thick oil paint with palette knives in energetic movements. The composition and vivid contrasting colours further contribute to the power of this artwork. The Grey-Smiths and the Holmes à Courts were good friends and the Collection includes the largest holding of works by this significant Western Australian artist.
