Kaarda (goanna) by Joyce Winsley (1938 – 2001)

Sculpture
Kaarda (Lizard)

Joyce Winsley (aka Yorga Moorntuk ) (1938 – 2001) and a group of women created a craft group in Narrogin, Western Australia, which quickly gained a wide profile. Joyce’s sculptures are made predominantly of Guildford grass (Romula rosea) which is endemic to the Wheatbelt. Joyce was a child of the Stolen Generations, and making art was an important way to reclaim her culture. This work was acquired through the Katanning Art Prize in 1997.
