Stained glass window
This stunningly coloured stained glass window is among six windows which adorn the St John’s Church building in Pinjarra. The church was originally built of thatched wattle and daub in 1842, thanks to a two pound donation from the McLarty family, who’d recently arrived from Scotland. It was reconstructed into its current form in 1861. This window was commissioned in memory of former Western Australian premier Sir Duncan Ross McLarty and his wife Violet Olive Margaret McLarty. Ross McLarty was a descendant of the pioneering family who had aided the church’s formation all those years before. He grew up in the McLarty family home at nearby Edenvale, and went on to serve on several community boards and committees. He was WA premier from 1947 to 1953. The McLarty family continues to farm in Pinjarra today.
