Australian Women’s Army Service Hat

Apparel

This broad brimmed felt hat might be well-worn now, but in its day, it was very stylish. In fact, the hat’s attractive design was important in recruiting women into the Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS). Formed in 1941, the AWAS served in signals, intelligence, administration, driving and catering around Australia and in New Guinea. The AWAS served in defence roles at Princess Royal Fortress in 1943. This particular hat was worn by Gunner Agnes Mary Noack.
