Tree of Survival

Photograph

This tree is the perfect symbol for this place. A tree, struck by lightning, that could have been destroyed, has given rise to a new growth, a sapling growing up from the old tree trunk. Standing in front are three Aboriginal men whose story echoes that of the tree. Peter Woods, Syd Jackson and Les Wallam were each taken from their families as young children, and placed at Roelands Native Mission. This experience caused much pain and anger, but they have each found inner strength to live with this trauma and to forge new opportunities, for themselves and for others.
