The Best Family Guide to Albany and Denmark this Summer
Many savvy Perth families love to escape the Summer temperatures and make the most of the long school holidays by heading down south. Just a few hours' drive and the temperatures are lower, the beaches are picture-perfect and everyone slips into relaxation mode! We’ve curated the best family guide to unique summer hotspots in beautiful Albany and Denmark - some you may never have heard of before!
Albany
To See:
Albany’s Historic Whaling Station
One of Albany’s most popular attractions, the Historic Whaling Station offers visitors an immersive journey into the region's unique maritime past. It is all perched against the stunning backdrop of King George Sound and its picturesque surrounding islands. Operating as Australia’s last functioning whaling station for 26 years, this site now serves as a fascinating window into an era that will never be repeated. Here, you can explore captivating exhibits that bring to life the stories of the men who braved the open seas and those who worked in the processing facility during the whaling industry. Visitors can delve into the station’s extensive collection of historic photographs, discover original artefacts, and join guided tours.
National ANZAC Centre
King George Sound holds a profound historical significance as the departure point for Australian and New Zealand soldiers heading to the First World War, making Albany the last piece of home many of them would see before their journey. Overlooking this poignant site is the National ANZAC Centre, situated within the grounds of the Princess Royal Fortress on the CBD side of the Sound. This immersive museum experience allows visitors to engage with the personal stories of 32 men and women who played a part in the war. Each visitor can select an individual card to follow along the timeline of a unique person, allowing each family member to connect to a different narrative of bravery, loss, and resilience. The centre also displays historical items and memorabilia, encouraging remembrance of those who endured, served, and sacrificed during the Great War.
The Gap and Natural Bridge
Challenge your family’s sense of adventure and step onto the exhilarating viewing platform, the Gap - where you can stand over 40m of surging seas! A (very safe and sturdy) viewing platform has been constructed to withstand all sorts of weather conditions on Albany’s rugged coastline. Here, you’ll witness the dramatic beauty of the Southern Ocean—where each day reveals a new mood. Some days it is calm and mesmerising, other days it is fierce with water sprays and crashing against the rocks.
To Eat:
Breakfast at Three Anchors

With a beautifully crafted coffee in hand, parents can relax while watching the kids enjoy the maritime-themed playground. Lunch at Luma Luma
It’s always quite challenging to find healthy food options on the way to the beach! Luma is a recent addition to Albany dishing out delicious acai bowls for those warm summer days, a healthy assortment of nourish bowls - both warm and cold, and yummy sushi! Be quick and organised because they often sell out before 1pm.
Dinner at Due South
Perched on the water’s edge of Princess Royal Harbor, Due South is the ideal spot for dinner, drinks, and unforgettable sunset views.
