Yalgoo cup
A win for a horse-racing priest
Monsignor John Hawes was known locally, not just for his priesthood and architecture, but for his horsemanship. The priest would set out on long horse rides into the arid Mullewa countryside to visit his parishioners. He also was rather partial to the odd horse race. Hawes won this Yalgoo Cup in 1926, when his five-year-old mare Babs placed first in the maiden hack race.
