Riots at Dingbat Flat

On 28 January 1928, a range of social tensions on the Goldfields hit fever pitch. The area known as Dingbat Flat, which housed all the non-British miners, was set ablaze. The incident was the result of a misunderstanding over the cause of death of miner George Edward Jordan. Jordan died from an accidental injury which occurred at a local hotel, although there were suggestions that he had been killed by fellow migrant workers.
