Portrait of Jane Adams
The heart of Mangowine
Jane Swain Adams could best be described as determined and resolute. After her husband Charles died at the age of 49, Jane singlehandedly continued to care for nine children and run Mangowine Homestead and the inn. Jane ran the entire business including the accounts, tended to livestock and the kitchen garden. She even baked and cooked for all the travellers passing through, and managed the lodgings. Jane died in 1934 at the age of 83 and outlived her husband by 34 years. In 2003, Jane was inducted into the Western Australian Agricultural Hall of Fame.
