Tin yandy
Milling and mining
This tin yandy is shaped in the traditional form of a coolamon dish that is shaken in a rhythmic motion to separate grass seeds from their husks for damper making. Adapted, it was used by Aboriginal women to separate the tin from the dirt. After the Pilbara Strike in 1946, which saw Aboriginal station workers leave stations because of low or no wages, some people attained mining leases and set up their own companies, mining tin, beryl, tantalite and columbite around Port Hedland and Marble Bar to support their communities.
