Country Womens Association sign
In July 1935, 17 women had gathered at the house of Mrs Claude Martin to form the Marble Bar Country Women's Association (CWA) branch to provide a town-based haven for the women who were 'doing it hard' on the surrounding sheep stations. Isolated for most of the year, these women only came to town for essentials – having babies, visits to the doctor, shopping, and for annual social events such as Race Week. Such visits were made affordable by the cheap accommodation at the CWA hostel. The Association also raised funds for the community. In 1967 the Marble Bar Country Women’s Association bought Poinciana House, one of the district’s finest houses, described as "a beauty spot and an oasis in the hot town of Marble Bar".
