Stations of the Cross by Matthew Tjupurrula Gill
Matthew Tjupurrula Gill is a Christian Kukatja artist of the remote Balgo Hills community in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Gill became an ambassador for his people and the church within his community. A man of two worlds he translated the biblical stories and characters into his own symbolic, visual language Incorporating icons from his belief system as a Kukatja man. Controversially, Gill created a unique envisioning of the Stations of the Cross—the last day of Christ on Earth—depicting the suffering Jesus as an emu. The ink drawings reveal his artistic skill, and the way in which he drew on his culture to reflect his understanding of the Christian message.
