When Christianity came to Texas Downs by Queenie McKenzie

Artwork
Getting Christian

Acclaimed artist Queenie McKenzie painted this work for the Painting the Future exhibition in 1998. Queenie said, ‘My painting shows Mary, Joseph and Jesus telling stories to Gija people after they became Christians’. Painted in the iconic East Kimberley style with natural ochres, the work reflects the deeply personal connections that Queenie and her people have with the story and spirituality of Christianity.
