Ceremonial hats
Joonba hats
Covered in white ochre, tall, and held together with string and masking tape, these paperbark headdresses are from the Namoowalen Joonba. Worn by men who, in characteristic joonba style, pound the ground with their feet, these headdresses have to be robust enough to survive the performance. The Namoowalen Joonba comes from Ivanhoe Crossing. Nancy Dilyai is the custodian. The story is about the snake that lives nearby in Brolga Springs, his fight with a crocodile and a devil-devil, and how two clever men protected the crocodile. This joonba is performed at Corroboree Under The Stars by the Miriwoong dancers.
