Message in a bottle
The Group Settlement Scheme relied on migrants who wanted to improve their lot in life and were prepared to work hard to get ahead. This ambition was revealed in an amusing discovery in the wall of one of the ‘Groupie’s, when it was being dismantled. In 1924, two young men from England, aged 24 and 17 years old, assembled one of the standard kit houses allocated to the Group Settlers. They left a message in a bottle hidden in the wall addressed ‘To the Finder. Stop, Look, Listen’. The bottle was discovered 90 years later and revealed the young mens’ goal was to own a smart red Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, pictured with their hand written note to the finder. The note and picture are now framed and on display in the old ‘Groupie’.
