Etched plate

This illustration was created using a photoengraving process. The image is put onto a zinc plate photographically. The plate is coated with a light sensitive emulsion and exposed with an image which hardens the lines to be kept. When the plate is exposed to acid, it will etch away the metal, leaving the line work.
