Murray Districts Historical Society

Heritage precinct amid rose blooms

Murray Districts Historical Society stores its collection in an old school master’s house, built in Pinjarra in 1896. The house sits perched alongside a heritage rose garden, heavy with the scent of these vibrant blooms. The Society’s collection includes a vast stock of photographs and information on the region’s European pioneers, as well as historical artefacts. Interpretive signage brings to life some of the artefacts and rooms. Be sure to check out the list of “Rules for female teachers” from 1915. These included: “may not dress in bright colours” and “must not loiter in ice cream bars!” Be sure to take a stroll back through the rose garden to view the historic St John’s Church and admire its stained glass windows. See if you can spot the tiny dog hidden among the images in some of the windows.
