Children with the Roelands Native Mission bus

Photograph

The orange bus pictured here was a step up on the Mission truck which used to take the children to play sport and be part of other events. The children took part in many sports, often fielding a team from the Mission and, at other times, recruiting other Aboriginal children from nearby. The Roelands teams – in hockey, football and basketball - are remembered as being hard to beat! They also excelled in athletics competitions. For many years, Roelands Native Mission had a small primary school. Later, children attended Brunswick Primary School, while older children went to secondary schools at Bunbury and Harvey.
