Melted Coins

Currency

This small clutch of melted metal vividly illustrates the ferocity of the fire which tore through Dwellingup on January 24, 1961. The coins are melted into the remains of the Sunshine powdered milk tin in which they were stored. The fire destroyed most businesses, many homes and farms as well as the hospital but, incredibly, no lives were lost. Within a few days, the mill towns of Marrinup, Nanga Brook and Holyoake were razed.
