Busselton Museum

Take a step back in time

The Busselton Museum is the home of the Busselton Historical Society and its wide-ranging collection, cared for by a large team of volunteers. The factory building has been joined on this site by numerous small buildings which present the area’s history, including a re-constructed Group Settler cottage, a one-teacher schoolhouse and a small hut from the World War II RAAF Aerodrome in Busselton. Within the Old Butter Factory, themed rooms tell of many aspects of the area’s history, including the important industries of dairy, timber and agriculture, as well as its maritime history. The upstairs displays focus on domestic life. Looking through the cabinets one can’t help but be impressed by the efforts that were taken to maintain standards of genteel appearance. Items of curiosity include a small box carefully covered with echidna quills. After a journey of discovery through the building, take a moment to enjoy the tranquility of the Vasse River which flows at the rear of the site. The river is a reminder of the productive natural environment which saw the development of the settlements of Vasse and Busselton in the 1850s. From the rotunda on the riverbank, many bird species can be identified. It is a perfect setting to reflect on the stories contained in the Museum’s fascinating collection.
