Stitches in the air

This is the oldest piece of lace in the collection, dating from c. 1540's. Reticella or needle lace is created by stitching openwork stitches on linen or parchment. Punto in Aria is made by first creating grounding threads to construct ‘stitches in the air'.

Mother-of-pearl and lace fan

Brussels lace fan

This fan is originally from Brussels and was made in about 1890. Olwyn Scott, who curated the Lace Place collection, painstakingly rebuilt this fan over the original mother-of-pearl frame.
